Understanding Therapy Credentials

What’s the Difference Between an LPC and LPC Associate?

When searching for a therapist, you may notice different credentials listed after their names. Understanding these differences can help you feel more confident when choosing the right therapist for your needs.

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

An LPC is a fully licensed mental health professional who has completed the required graduate education, supervised clinical experience, and licensing examinations. LPCs can practice independently and provide therapy for a variety of mental health concerns.

Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (LPC Associate)

An LPC Associate has completed graduate-level education and the required licensing examination and is gaining additional clinical experience under the supervision of a qualified LPC Supervisor.

LPC Associates provide professional counseling services while receiving ongoing clinical supervision and guidance.

Both LPCs and LPC Associates can provide compassionate, effective mental health support. The best fit often comes down to your individual needs, the therapist's specialties, their approach, and how comfortable you feel working together.

Which Therapist Is Right for Me?

Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already navigating something difficult. The relationship you have with your counselor matters deeply. Feeling safe, understood, and supported is one of the most important parts of meaningful progress.

As you explore our team, you may want to consider:

  • Do I feel connected to this therapist’s approach and tone?

  • Do they have experience with what I’m currently navigating?

  • Does their style feel structured, reflective, direct, or gentle in a way that fits me?

There is no single “best” therapist, only the right fit for you.

If you’re unsure who would be the best match, we’re here to help. Reach out through our contact page and share a little about what brings you in, what you’re hoping for, and any preferences you may have. We will thoughtfully guide you toward the clinician whose training, personality, and approach align best with your goals.
